Applicants with a prior qualification, such as a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or equivalent, may apply at the time of application. Subject outlines are to be submitted for credit to be assessed. Non-school leavers / mature-aged applicants Each year, depending on the quality of applications, around 20 to 25 students are admitted who are not directly from Year 12. Some may have completed as little as one year of university study in another degree, and others may have completed degrees and have significant life experience. Have you ever had a blood test ordered by a doctor? Has any family member ever had a blood transfusion? Do you know anybody who suffers from respiratory, cardiovascular or nervous system disorders? Do you ever require medication? If so, the skills, specialist knowledge and expertise of a medical scientist have played a role in your life and the lives of those around you. An internationally recognised and accredited course with a proud history extending more than 20 years, CSU's Bachelor of Medical Science is the ideal choice to launch your career as a medical scientist. On graduation, you’ll be well positioned to choose from abundant employment opportunities in the healthcare industry in Australia and overseas. Why study this course? Four reasons to study with CSU: interested in medical science but unsure which path to take? CSU’s course is highly flexible, allowing you to ‘test the water’ in a variety of disciplines. You can then either specialise in Pathology, Biotechnology or Clinical Physiology, or become a highly adaptable generalist with a wide range of skills applicable across different specialisations gain a broad foundation in medical science as preparation for entry into postgraduate study or research programs, or transfer to a pharmacy, biotechnology or other university degree, subject to eligibility requirements this course is delivered with flexibility in mind. Choose between full-time, part-time and online study options to match your work and lifestyle commitments on campus applicants may be eligible to apply for a Science Scholarship, valued at $4,000 per year. Medical scientists with training in pathology form the vital link in the chain of medical services through their work in hospital laboratories, private pathology laboratories and universities. They conduct laboratory analysis on blood, body fluids and tissues to provide essential scientific information for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Working in clinical measurement laboratories, medical scientists form another vital link in the chain of medical services by assessing the physiological functioning of the cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory systems. Results of these clinical measurements are used in the accurate diagnosis and management of diseases such as atherosclerosis, epilepsy and asthma. Medical scientists are an integral component of the total healthcare team in hospitals, liaising with other health professionals and patients. They also form the key elements of research teams examining the efficacy of new treatments or developing new medicines and healthcare products. What will I learn? All students complete a common first year program, which includes units in chemistry, anatomy and physiology, statistics and microbiology. At the start of the second year, students can then elect to move into a specialisation and take subjects relevant to their areas of interest. Specialisations are available in Pathology, Biotechnology and Clinical Physiology. There is also potential for movement between specialisations within the course. Alternatively, students can elect to remain in the generic course and take a mix of subjects to suit their individual interests, with the option of gaining a broad knowledge in medical science. This will be especially attractive to those seeking a flexible undergraduate science degree that provides a broad background as an option for entry into research programs. Academic advisers will be available at all times to provide guidance on subject choices. There is also the potential for transfer from the Bachelor of Medical Science into other courses, such as the Bachelor of Pharmacy, during the course (based on grade point average (GPA)). Articulation agreements Although no official approved articulation agreements exist, there are credit packages available to recognise prior learning. Career opportunities This broad-based course offers you diverse career options in the healthcare industry and gives you the flexibility to choose an area of specialisation. Pathology specialisation Employment opportunities are found in the following areas of medical science: anatomy biochemistry biotechnology blood bank cell biology cytogenetics genetics haematology histology immunology immunohaematology microbiology. Potential employment also exists in medical research in hospitals, medical research institutions and IVF clinics. This specialisation has accreditation from the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS). Biotechnology specialisation Graduates of the Biotechnology specialisation will be prepared for roles in: biotechnology and pharmaceutical research forensic DNA analysis plant biotechnology employment as a patent attorney. The course has an emphasis on producing graduates with a range of skills and knowledge in biotechnology and the way in which biotechnology is used in agriculture, food production, bioinformatics, genetic engineering and medicine. Clinical Physiology specialisation This area of study will qualify you for entry into clinical measurement laboratories involved in the assessment of physiological functioning of the nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Clinical measurement involves the performance of physiological tests to diagnose and ‘fine-tune’ the therapeutic management of already established disease. Careers in clinical research are also available in hospital and university research teams. These often focus on the development of new measurement techniques and a better understanding of the processes of specific diseases. There is an emphasis on cardiorespiratory and nervous system anatomy and physiology, fundamental physiological testing techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiography (ECG) and spirometry, as well as more advanced testing modalities for each of these three vital body systems. This specialisation will qualify you to become involved in critical areas of Australian public health. Generic course By choosing subjects from a range of discipline areas, you have the option of gaining a broad knowledge in medical science. This will be especially attractive to those seeking a flexible undergraduate science program that provides a broad background as an option for entry into postgraduate study or research, or as preparation for entry to graduate entry health and medicine courses. Alternatively, you may use your knowledge of medical science to enter a rewarding career in public health or health administration in the public or private sector. Admission information Indicative ATAR 70.00 Whilst there are no HSC subjects specified as a prerequisite for admission, school leavers are advised to include 2 unit Mathematics and 2 unit Chemistry in their HSC studies or recognised equivalent. Successful applicants who believe they do not have an appropriate high school chemistry background are strongly recommended to undertake the chemistry subject offered in the University's Studylink supplementary program prior to commencing study in the course. Students entering the course mid-year may not be able to complete full-time study in their first session of enrolment. International students will only be able to commence on campus mid-year where their prior study is sufficient to gain credit for Session 1 subjects. [-]
